Roses sits at the southern end of the Bay of Roses (Golf de Roses), a wide natural bay at the foot of the Cap de Creus peninsula on the northernmost section of the Costa Brava. The town is approximately 160 km from Barcelona. Its main beach stretches for several kilometres and is known for its reliable winds — making it one of Spain's premier destinations for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
The ruined Ciutadella fortress, dating from the 16th century, dominates the seafront. Cap de Creus Natural Park, the easternmost point of the Iberian Peninsula and one of Catalonia's most dramatic coastal landscapes, is accessible from Roses by road. The small village of Cadaqués, made famous by Salvador Dalí, is 20 km away on the far side of the Cap.
Roses holds significant gastronomic heritage: El Bulli, the three-Michelin-star restaurant of Ferran Adrià, operated in a cove (Cala Montjoi) just north of Roses and was repeatedly named the world's best restaurant. The area around Roses and the Bay remains a destination for serious food travellers.
