L'Escala sits on the southern shore of the Gulf of Roses on the northern Costa Brava, approximately 130 km from Barcelona. It is one of the few Costa Brava towns where traditional fishing culture remains genuinely active — the local anchovy industry has a protected denomination of origin and the harbour produces anchovies that are regarded as among the finest in the Mediterranean.
At the northern end of the town's beach sits Empúries — a Greek trading colony founded in the 6th century BC that later became a Roman city. The archaeological site is one of the most significant in the Iberian Peninsula and unusually positioned directly on the seafront, with ruins of Greek temples, a Roman forum, mosaics and an amphitheatre all visible against the Mediterranean backdrop.
There is no direct public transport from Barcelona to L'Escala. A private transfer is the most practical solution, particularly for families with children or groups arriving from the airport with luggage.

Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. The route uses the AP-7 north from Barcelona, passes Girona, then the C-31 toward the Gulf of Roses to reach L'Escala on the coast.
L'Escala is known for three things in particular: the Empúries archaeological site (Greek and Roman ruins on the seafront, one of the most remarkable in Spain), its fishing harbour and anchovy production (L'Escala anchovies are a protected denomination), and its beaches along the Gulf of Roses.
Yes — Empúries is located at the northern end of the main beach, about 1 km from the town centre. The site is walkable from most accommodation in L'Escala. A private transfer that brings you directly to L'Escala saves the significant complexity of public transport on this route.
Yes — direct private transfers from T1 or T2, with flight monitoring and arrivals meet and greet.
A private transfer is the most practical option. There is no direct train or bus from Barcelona to L'Escala — the public transport route requires a train to Figueres or Girona, then a bus, which does not serve many hotels and accommodation areas directly.
